"Jesus Set the Hook (now I'm saved!)" lyrics
<!—[if gte mso 9]>
“Jesus Set the Hook, Now I’m Saved!”
Devil thought he caught me,
till’ Jesus came and got me.
Devil thought he stole my soul away.
Snatched from the grip of Satan
Gates of hell stood waitin’
till’ Jesus come set the hook
Now I’m Saved!
Lured by temptation,
Sinful war was ragin’
Do I take the plunge, or do I walk away?
Achin’ and a yearnin’
My lust for sin was burnin’
till’ Jesus set the hook, and now I’m saved!
(Bridge)
Jesus come and save the day
drop your net and haul away!
Separate the wheat from chaff
Net’s too small? Then use your gaff!
Leave me flop around the deck
Free from sin, the fires of heck.
Spare me from temptation Lord
Saved from sin!
Filleted on board!
About my song
This song was inspired while I was driving home from work one day, headed from Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island in the Pacific Northwest. I happened to pass what appeared to be a religious revival ceremony in process, staged under a big canopy tent in someone’s yard. This is an usual site in our neck of the woods! One thinks of these revivals as taking place in the deep south, or in the prairie states, with a preacher hollering fire and damnation and people swaying and chanting, “Amen, and Alleluia!” So I decided (tongue-in-cheek) to capture the theme of a religious revival Northwest style; and what better way to do that, to sing about getting hooked on Jesus . . . . literally . . . and not only “hooked,” but netted, gaffed, filleted, packed, wrapped, and frozen! So enjoy the tongue-in-cheek humor of this little spoof on a religious revival northwest style!
