"Tonight You're Going Out" lyrics

Words & Music by Clive Barratt (Registered at SOCAN)

(Verse 1)

Woke up with a headache and your back hurts

Spilled your coffee at breakfast and stained your skirt

Hit the morning traffic and you’re on the run

But it’s moving real slow the stress has just begun

(Verse 2)

Your feet are sore and your eyes sting

Try to make ends meet putting overtime in

They pay you next to nothing

Though you’ve had the job for years

Thinking ’bout it too much can bring you to tears

(Chorus)

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out, gonna’ let your hair down

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out,

Someday your life’ll  turn around

(Verse 3)

Back in the rush-hour traffic, it’s another mad dash

Focus on the road, can’t afford a crash

Hurry back home, got to get the supper on

Since six o’clock this morning,  you’ve been on the run

Make the meals, do dishes, run the kids a bath

The older one needs help with homework math

A telemarketer calls on the telephone

You say “Please stop calling and leave me alone”

(Chorus)

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out, gonna’ let your hair down

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out,

Someday your life’ll  turn around

 INSTRUMENTAL………

(Verse 4)

The kids are in bed fast asleep

Go and double check ‘em… there’s not a peep

Take a long bath, get your make-up done,

You look good as you slide that black dress on

(Outro Chorus)

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out,  gonna’ let your hair down

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out,

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out, gonna’ let your hair down

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out,

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out, gonna’ let your hair down

Tonight you’re going out, out on the town

Tonight you’re going out,

Someday your life’ll turn  around

About my song

Tonight You’re Going Out by Clive Barratt

 Birth of the song

Early in 2011, Clive and wife Carol, were casually discussing how overloaded and tired they often felt, due to the demands of work and so many other responsibilities in their lives and not having enough hours in a day to deal with everything they felt needed to be dealt with. Clive and Carol live on an acreage, run a hobby farm with a few horses, have full time jobs and have two children; one in high school, the other in university.

Clive commented that at least he and Carol are happily married and support each other through the stress, but that for many single parents, life would be particularly difficult, having to deal with these sorts of things alone. Carol suggested that this might be a good concept for a song.

Bouncing lyrical ideas off Carol, the was song born. Originally, it was written to suit either a male or female subject but over time, it was felt that focussing more on the stress women face, might make the song more emotional.

Recording & Production

In January 2011, a basic demo track was recorded at Gold Room Studios in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. It was later re-recorded at Marpole Studios in Langley, B.C, by producer Rob Begg. Roger Belanger who spent approximately 15 years drumming for Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) provided drums and background vocals. Recording was completed in May 2011.
